About GLW

In 1997, ERVK’s Girls’ Leadership Workshop (GLW) was created in order to promote women’s empowerment nationally and now internationally. The program started leadership training program for high school-aged girls, focusing on Eleanor Roosevelt as a role model.

The GLW has been highly successful in contributing toward developing self-esteem, confidence, self-definition, and leadership skills as well as social consciousness and commitment to citizenship in the participants. ERVK believes this program will serve as a model here in the United States and abroad. ERVK offers this 9-day program twice annually to 30 finalists for each session.

The GLW program occurs primarily in the Stone Cottage at Val-Kill, Eleanor Roosevelt’s country retreat in Hyde Park, New York. The program consists of workshops, interactive seminars, a service project, all-day field trips to New York City and Albany, creative and cultural activities and time to relax and reflect.

Inspired by the example of Eleanor Roosevelt, participants will:

• Develop powerful leadership skills.

• Meet with and learn from accomplished women.

• Travel to New York City and meet with international woman leaders at the United Nations.

•Explore the concept of citizenship through participation in a community service project.

• Learn about the role of women in state government and politics through a visit to Albany.

• Team build through hands-on experiences such as rock climbing and group presentations.

• Establish a mentoring relationship with women doctors, attorneys, architects and other pioneers.

• Increase self-confidence and self-esteem.

• Become more knowledgeable about women’s history and women’s issues and concerns.

“This has been a wonderful experience for me. I have learned and grown so much. I have met wonderful people and I am a better person for coming here.”
