Diversity Coalition

The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill (ERVK) launched the Diversity Coalition with a mission to promote a universal culture of inclusion valuing diversity and economic opportunity, treating individuals with respect and dignity.

Background
The Diversity Coalition was inspired during the 1997 Medal Awards Ceremony. In his acceptance speech, recipient Hollis Shaw made reference to an ERVK initiative called Enhancing Racial Harmony, a program that ran from 1988-1992. Shaw referred to it as an “unfinished agenda” and challenged ERVK to revisit this issue. In 1998 the Race Relations Committee was formed; this committee instituted a five-year plan focusing initially on the theme of economic opportunity. In May 1999, 150 citizens representing a broad base of the community attended a daylong National Issues Forum entitled “Economic Opportunity in a Culturally Diverse Community” at Dutchess Community College, co-sponsored by the college, the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Gillespie Forum. Four task forces were formed by the Race Relations Committee to address issues identified at the forum. The task forces began their work in the summer of 1999 and on March 7, 2001, presented a public report to the community of actions being taken and proposed to remove obstacles to equal opportunity in Dutchess County.
